RESEARCH

The project addresses important issues pertaining to the effects of climate and environmental changes on human populations in the past. By combining published, unpublished, as well as newly-obtained data from recent excavations at Saqqara, the project seeks to provide a substantial augmentation to the existing bioarchaeological evidence for the Memphite region and comparative data for broader geographical and temporal studies. The application of a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the Saqqara burials offers an in-depth understanding of multifactorial processes that affected and shaped the Memphite population through time.

The project is the first to offer a comprehensive study of the funerary textiles from Saqqara, a much neglected artefact that has great informative potential with regard to changes in burial practices, social status and funerary wealth of the population, and contemporary environmental conditions.

The project applies modern digital technology and scientific and investigative techniques alongside standard methods of bioarcheological data gathering to ensure the best possible outcomes and future accessibility of data to broader audiences.
